Dr. Hertz's research team at the Monell Center for Chemical Sensing has proven that memories of the sense of smell last much longer than sight and hearing.Remembering the past through smell is called the "Frost phenomenon," and in Proust's "Finding Lost Time," the main character Marcel smelled madeleine soaked in black tea and recalled her childhood.It is said that there is something special about the way the olfactory nerve conveys information.All other senses are transmitted to the brain through sagittal and recognized, and the sense of smell is transmitted directly to the brain responsible for memory and emotion.Therefore, when a negative and shocking experience is accompanied by an sense of smell, it is bound to be remembered for a long time.It is said that the memory sensed by the sense of smell affects the emotional and social aspects.
Unfortunately, most of the smells of childhood that Hong Dang-moo remembers were odors."Home" easily reminds me of the most comfortable and peaceful place where we can stay warm and spend dark nights safely.However, Hong Dangmu had no choice but to remember the house as a dirty and scary space.After his parents divorced, Hong Dang-moo came to live with his younger brother, Pumpkin, and his father.Even before divorce, mothers and fathers often fought loudly, and they were often hurt by mothers who discriminated against their younger brothers and themselves, but life without even such a mother was harsher for young Hong Dang-moo.After the divorce, my dad drank, smoked, and picked up all kinds of discarded items at home every day.Of course, no one was cleaning.The smell of strong alcohol, the smell of stubby dust, the smell of bad food as it rotted, and the smell of cigarette butts from mugs that were repurposed as ashtray...….What kind of adult has Hong Dang-moo, who grew up in a house full of garbage and was told by his father that he was a "dirty rat" suffering from all kinds of diseases, become now?

According to the recently surveyed "National Quality of Life Report," the average Korean life satisfaction was 5.9 out of 10.The remarkable increase in the survey is the "experience rate of child abuse".There are more than 500 cases per 100,000 people under the age of 18.In 2021, the civil law removed the disciplinary right clause, but eight out of ten adults still do not know that corporal punishment is prohibited.Of course, physical abuse is not the only abuse.Emotional abuse and neglect are also abuse.It is also abusive to let the whole family become a garbage dump like Hong Dang-moo's father, and to let the child take care of a younger child.In the book, there is a scene where Hong Dang-moo says he was lucky with himself, but in light of our current reality, it can be said that.Hong Dangmu had a small light called "Jo" and could have saved himself through "Scent," but there are so many children in the world who are dying without anyone knowing.Even if they survive, the aftereffects of child abuse are very serious.There is a saying that it takes a whole village to raise a child.Our job is to see and listen to any abused children around.Even if you hear the suspicion of abuse, you can report it even if you can't specify the number.It is said that just the police dispatched can stop the dangerous situation.Child abuse is not an individual or family problem, but a social problem that can change a child's future.Individual interest, as well as improvement of related systems and changes in the system, should be preceded.Only then can you have a chance to save yourself like Hong Dang-moo, even if you have suffered in a life you did not choose.
Courage to face the wounded young me.
Are there people who are happy and happy about their childhood memories?It will be difficult to leave only comfortable memories when you experience new experiences every day, feel unfamiliar emotions, and they mix up wildly and are not well distinguished from what is.So is the memory of Hongdangmu in "The Fragrance that Encloses Me."The sweet scent of the three-year-old birthday cake decorated with colored cherries mixed with the sound of mom and dad fighting and the smell of disinfectant given to the grandmother who hugged her who was crying in fear.As such, memories of a young day have various senses, smiling and crying faces and suddenly showing their heads.
No wonder I'm not happy with the sudden memory.Painful memories sometimes break through heads and chests even as adults.So I think I want to erase bad memories and painful memories and focus on my life now.But the way the writer approaches the wound is a little different.In the work, the question is, 'Should the wound be erased?' and 'Shouldn't the wound be respected since it is also a part of the person?'
The author asked readers a similar question in his previous work, "Two Friends on My Shoulder."The question was, "Is it really right to consider trauma only as an object of overcoming?"Just as the rabbit acknowledged the trauma of being a "Leopard" and hugged him, Hong Dang-moo in "The Fragrance that Encloses Me" also recommends looking at the wound as it is.You can only be comfortable when you stare straight at the wound without distortion and understand it.Hong Dang-moo in "The Fragrance that Encloses Me" is a friend the artist met while studying abroad.So, this story is a true story experienced by a real person.In some ways, the story of Hong Dang-moo's childhood is more harrowing than the underprivileged childhood in the novel, which can make readers uncomfortable.Nevertheless, it would have been possible for Hong Dang-moo to share his story with his friends and readers because he is now in a state where the wound is not uncomfortable with him and can be accepted as part of himself.So, reading this book, I would have hoped that everyone living with their wounds healed would be as comfortable as themselves.
