book introduction

Karel Capek, who is called the 'national writer' of the Czech Republic, wanted to share the experience of seeing, feeling, and interacting while raising dogs and cats, and the result is 『Raising Dogs and Cats』. This book, accompanied by illustrations by Karel's brother, painter and illustrator Josef Capek, was published in 1939 and vividly shows what life was like with dogs and cats in Prague, the Czech capital, more than 100 years ago.

The episodes and illustrations that stand out for the observation and expressive power of the Charpek brothers stimulate the imagination and evoke all kinds of actions of the two animals like a video right before your eyes. I can't help but sympathize with the endless troubles of dogs and cats, and the human heartache caused by them, and the complaints and expressions of affection for this animal that we can't help but love.

About the author and translator

Karel Capek (Author)

Not only is he regarded as the greatest Czech writer in the 20th century, but he is also the most loved and respected by Czechs during the millennium of Czech literature. Together with Franz Kafka and Milan Kundera, he is one of the world's leading writers in the Czech Republic. He is a Czech writer who has worked as a playwright, screenwriter, essayist, publisher, critic and journalist.
He, who had turned his eyes to the ills of the modern society, savagely satirizes social ills through the plays RUR and Insect Life (Ze života hmyzu, 1921). 《RUR》 is a science drama that warns that the development of technology may destroy humans in a tragic way while tragic depicting the extreme mechanization that robots, or androids, replace human labor. The word 'robot' we use today is derived from this work. The word robot is derived from the Czech word robota, and robota means hard labor or side labor in Czech.
Karel Capek is, above all, one of the leading writers who pioneered 20th century science fiction and utopian novels and plays through his dramas RUR (Rossum's Universal Robots, 1921) and Krakátit (1924). He became a man, and gained worldwide fame for his works based on the relativism and deep humanism of pragmatic philosophy. Capek also built an original work world based on traditional realism while adding utopian and sci-fi elements and techniques of detective novels and popular novels.
His natural talent reached its climax in his three major novels, Hordubal (1933), Shooting Star (Povětroň, 1934) and Ordinary Life (Obyčejný život, 1934). These novels focus on the issue of truth while observing from different perspectives through the protagonists of different professions in solving a single case. The novel deals with the epistemological problem and phenomenological point of view of philosophy. In particular, it shows a deep trust in relativity rather than absoluteness of truth in a fictional situation.

Introduction of the book provided by the publisher

Dogs and cats as part of our lives
Taking a dog for a walk in a neighborhood or park is a very familiar scene for us. More and more people are posting photos of their pets on social media. Living with pets has now become an irreplaceable part of our society. As a result, interest in pets has grown. Sharing the various experiences of raising a pet is a great pleasure above all else. That is why movies, webtoons, and essays about the representative companion animals of dogs and cats are very popular. Karel Čapek, who is called the 'national writer' of the Czech Republic, also wanted to share the experience of seeing, feeling, and interacting with dogs and cats, and the result is 『Raising Dogs and Cats』. This book, published in 1939, accompanied by illustrations by Karel's brother, painter and illustrator Josef Capek, vividly shows what life was like with dogs and cats in Prague, the Czech capital, more than 100 years ago. The episodes and illustrations that stand out for the observation and expressiveness of the Capek brothers stimulate the imagination and bring to mind all the actions of the two animals right in front of your eyes. I can't help but sympathize with the endless troubles of dogs and cats, and the human heartbreak caused by them, and the complaints and expressions of affection for this animal that we can't help but love.

Living with your pets
In 『Raising Dogs and Cats』, we meet several pets that were with Carel. As an Airedale terrier, she has great strength, so when she goes out for a walk, she drags Carel around. The four dogs, Ben, Benji, Blackkey, and Vivi, swept the whole house, making a fuss to the extent that they created the illusion that they were 4,400 dogs. Iris, who hid from the naughty puppies, and then came back to lick and breastfeed every nook and cranny when she heard the sad whining sound of the puppies. Dashenka, a puppy dog, would turn his head or run away when he was just about to take a picture. The cat, Poodlenka, boasted of miraculous productivity and gave birth to kittens three or four times a year. The affection expressed in Karel's sentences describing them will make you smile.
Carell also criticizes the trend in which some breeds become too many and others disappear with fashion. There are countless different kinds of dogs in the world, and there should be no species that disappears due to human fads or snobbish whims. And they are also wary of raising them with greed, while not providing the necessary conditions for the breed to follow the trends. This has great implications for us now as well. This is because there are still many cases where they give priority to breeds that can make money, prefer only trendy breeds, and start raising them without thinking about it, and then abandon them without responsibility.
Since it was a time when companion animal culture was quite different from what it is today, there are scenes that can be uncomfortable from the current point of view. There was no way to control the population due to the behavior of dog owners who neglected their mothers to reproduce and the envy of obedience, etc. Show limits. However, there are always limitations in any era, and no one can assert that a 'perfect' companion animal culture is still in place. Rather, by looking back at those days and the present, wouldn't it be possible to gauge what level our society has reached? It will be a good gift for those who want to calmly look back on life with their pets.
