About the author and translator
Yuri Shulevitz (Jieun)
He was born in Poland in 1935. His family, who are Jewish, fled their country, which had been engulfed by the fire of World War II, from the age of four, and wandered around Europe. The hopeless wandering life, which was the only joy of turning over picture books at bookstores, had a great influence on young Schlewitz's artistic sensibility. He moved to New York in 1957 and began taking art classes, from which time his artistic talents blossomed, winning the Caldecott Prize in 1968 for "The One and Only fool in the World and the Flying Boat." Other works include "Dawn", "Rainy Day", "The Map of the Dream I Met", "Treasure", "Secret Room", and "Winter Sunset".

Introduction of the book provided by the publisher
Isaac, a poor old man who unexpectedly found a treasure.
How should I use the treasure?
Where on earth was the treasure hiding?
With a beautiful picture, hope, effort, faith in possibilities,
And Yuri Schlewitz's "Treasure" that conveys the virtues of humility!
Yuri Schlewitz's Caldecott Honor Award-winning work that conveys the true meaning of 'treasure'!
If you open the first chapter of "Treasure", you will be surprised first. As if to show Isaac's stomach, which was said to be "how poor he is, he often goes hungry for dinner," the first chapter is empty without a picture. But it's not just the first chapter. There is no picture in the last chapter of "I will live well so that I will never be poor again." You may see Isaac, a very poor old man, discovering an unexpected "treasure" and enjoying all kinds of luxury, which is completely different from such an ordinary development. What kind of symbol does this work hold?
perseverance and effort to go back far to get something precious
And wisdom to use 'treasure' more valuable!
Isaac is a very poor old man. One day, Isaac goes a long way to the palace in search of the treasure as exemplified by his dream, but only when he arrives at the palace, he realizes that the treasure is under the furnace of his house and returns home. The next image of Isaac makes us realize a lot. Isaac is not upset that he has gone all the way back to find the treasure. Thank God for giving me an example to find the treasure, he builds a chapel and engraves his realization on the wall, saying, "Sometimes you have to go far to find something close." No matter how close you are, it metaphorically conveys that you have to put patience, effort, and sincerity into getting anything precious, just as it took hard work and hardship to go a long way to get a treasure. Isaac also sends expensive jewelry to the sentry commander who let him know the location of the treasure in front of the palace. He is making the "treasure" more valuable with his appreciation for what he has gained and his care to share.
The treasure hunt hidden in my heart.
The most impressive part of "Treasure" and the part that shows a twist, not a twist, is that the treasure that I thought was far away was right under the furnace of my house, and that someone else knew where Isaac's treasure was. If so, isn't there something in ourselves that we should cherish most, pay attention to, find hard, take out, and use it worthwhile? Everyone believes in the possibility that there is something shiny inside, and will grind it out and use it as a value, which will be another valuable gem delivered by "Treasure".
a painting by Yuri Schlewitz that makes "Treasure" more valuable
Treasures, which won the Caldecott Honor Award in 1980, is a reconstruction of old stories from Britain by Yuri Schlewitz with his own modest sentences and paintings. Yuri Schlewitz is already well known as a writer who expresses outstanding visual beauty and oriental sentiment through works such as "Rainy Day", "Dawn", and "Secret Room". In "Treasure", the natural scenery reminiscent of ink-and-wash painting here and there makes you feel the still visual beauty of Yuri Schlewitz. The composition of the first half and the second half giving a similar feeling as if they were reversed by changing the left and right, the still movements and restrained figure expressions as if they were watching a movie film at a time, visually highlight the beauty of nature painted in the background and convey the static feeling of the East. Yuri Schlewitz's beautiful paintings, which harmonize well with the text but feel free vitality without being bound by the text, add light to valuable stories such as "treasure."
