Set in the coldest winter at the end of World War II, it is a story of little love that Fred, a young boy, likes Elsa, his classmate, and overcomes difficult times with the warmth of love and friendship. It is a beautiful literary work by Swedish-born Wolf Starc, one of the best writers in Nordic children's literature, and invites young readers who have not been through the war to the winter of 1944, more than 70 years after the war.
Fred was given the name 'peace' by his parents, but to no avail. The war broke out. My dad had to leave home to protect the border, and my mom is tired of supporting a hard life. First love comes to Fred, who is full of longing for his father. Fred feels strangely warm when he thinks of his classmate, Elsa.
Elsa is strong, so she is good at arm wrestling, and her disheveled brown curly hair looks like electricity is flowing, even though she is a girl with a stuffy nose. Fred grows through the coldest winter with the warmth of a little love. The author very delicately captured the young boy's fresh and pure feelings of love in a lyrical and concise sentence.
He did not paint the reality of war darkly or heavyly, but put it in a small episode to talk about hope and joy, and drew criticism of reality, courage to confront life confidently, and the images of people living without losing their laughter in difficulties with a positive gaze. The illustration by Ida Vieshu, who is realistic and friendly, also goes very well with the story.

About the author and translator
Wolf Stark (Jieun)
Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1944. In 1964, he started writing children's literature with the novel Peter och den roada fageln after he entered the poetry collection "Ett halthill life". By his death in 2017, he had published more than 50 books and received several literary awards, including the 1988 Nils Holgeson Award, 1991 Astrid Lindgren Award, 1994 German Youth Literature Award, 1996 August Award for Children's Literature and 1998 Nordic Children's Literature Award. Paul and Paula, Whistle Grandfather, Bobo Yakup, and Little Book of Love were introduced in Korean, and Grandfather's Last Adventure, published as a posthumous work in 2018, was nominated for the August Award for Children's Literature in the same year. Ida Björs (pictured)
Born in Helsinki, Sweden in 1973. He studies graphic design and illustration at Konstpak University of Fine Arts and Crafts, Sweden, and works as an illustrator. Since 1999, he has participated in more than 40 exhibitions, illustrating more than 10 books and dozens of periodicals in Sweden. "A Little Book of Love" is the first book to be introduced in Korean.

Wolf Starc, master of Swedish children's literature
The creators of Northern Europe are not yet well known in our country. Wolf Starc, the author of the book, is the best writer in Northern Europe in name and reality who has won the Astrid Lindgren Award, the August Award, and the Nordic Children's Literature Award. Many of his works have been translated into different languages, capturing the hearts of children around the world. In June 2017, we decided to publish Wolf Starc's "A Little Book About Love" and soon after, news of the writer's unfortunate passing came out. This book became the last book to be published in his lifetime. We did our best throughout making the book in honor of the author Wolf Starc. I am grateful to be able to meet a great work that contains positivity and joy in life with the lyrical and concise sentences, solid composition, and delicate style of excellent sensitivity by the writer Wolf Starc. In particular, the book was produced with the sponsorship of translation by the Swedish Arts Council.
Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1944, the author lived in the same era as the main character Fred lived before the end of World War II, the setting of the book. The book was published on the 70th anniversary of the war and calmly tells the story of the coldest and most difficult winter of 1944 to children who have not been through the war.
World War II, the Winter of Fred
On September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland and Europe went to war, Sweden immediately declared that it would remain strictly neutral. As Hitler's relentless moves made the situation unstable, Fred's parents named the baby to be born Fred (meaning 'peace' in Swedish). I was hoping there wouldn't be a war. But war broke out. The emergency mobilization order issued to strengthen Sweden's defense posture left Fred's father north to protect the border, and his mother had to cover all the windows with black blackout curtains to prevent bombers from seeing the lights in the house. It was a hungry time when Christmas was approaching, but everything was rationed, so we couldn't expect Christmas food. The book is set in war, but the author does not focus on saving the reality of war. It depicts people who have lived through the period with a positive perspective, giving courage to each other with small love and overcoming difficult times.
Living in the shadow of war was not easy not only for adults but also for young boys. All Fred could do was imagine freely, dream 'what if' and try to laugh as much as he could. Fred, who misses his dad, meets his imaginary dad, talking to the vent in his clothes room with his clothes, shoes, and hats. When Fred confides in a secret or consults with his concerns, his father listens seriously and gives him advice. This time to talk to the vents was when Fred comforted himself, encouraged him, and grew up.
The Power of Little Love, A Little Book of Love
It was a cold and hard winter due to the war, but Fred has a first love. Fred feels strangely warm when he thinks of his classmate, Elsa. Elsa is strong, so she is good at arm wrestling, and her disheveled brown curly hair looks like electricity is flowing, even though she is a girl with a stuffy nose. The book highlights the delicate psychological description of Fred, a young boy whose little love began. The book shows Fred and Elsa's love for their parents, friends, teachers, and neighbors, as well as their love for peace and justice in a small episode. Fred is caught trying to tell Elsa the answer during a math test. Elsa, who knows nothing, is suspected of cheating with Fred. Elsa proudly informs the teacher of the injustice and leaves. The teacher says Elsa has done the right thing and everyone should not endure it when they are wronged. In addition, Fred made everyone laugh by attaching Hitler's mustache to a model of the human skeleton at school, but received a penalty notice. The penalty notice, which I gave to my mom with an apologetic heart, says that I praise Fred for his courageous behavior and am proud of him. The teacher replies to Fred, who says thank you, "This is a time when we all need joy." The artist shows that people who lived through the period share a small love with each other, giving them courage and not losing hope, and tells that it was the power of small love that allowed everyone to overcome the cold winter with laughter.
