+ Cheon Mi-jin of 『Doenjang Stew』, loved by children
Growing up as such a lonely and fun picture book writer
This book is the first essay by Yeorim Yoon and Mijin Cheon, who live while writing picture books with children's hearts. While working as an editor making picture books, he became a writer who was fascinated by the world of picture books. Writer Yeo-rim Yoon lived as a full-time writer for 22 years and wrote the process of writing a picture book as a piece of everyday life meets imagination. Writer Mi-jin Cheon, as the current editor for 18 years, focuses on the creative know-how that she wants to pass on to many aspiring writers.
Picture books are the genre closest to children's hearts, created by authors with the hope that children will read them. The daily life and work of the two writers, who usually live as mothers and office workers, but create with the mind of a child when writing, are as realistic as a documentary and as exciting as a sitcom. The process of writers' struggles to write short, lasting, and beautiful writing is also unfolding.
The two writers unanimously say, "It was good to become a children's writer." Writer Yeo-rim Yoon said, “While writing a story that sings of growth and dreams of hope, the child within me met the light, and I became brighter that much. I grew up.” He said, “I want to be a writer who grows up like a child forever.” Writer Cheon Mi-jin says, “Complex and long sentences don’t seem to have much power.” It's because I can't get it straight to my heart because I'm thinking about the meaning. He also said, “I hope that no one is lonely while reading picture books.”
As an appendix, we have included a list of recommended picture books that the two authors carefully selected for those who want to write in picture books or want to study picture books, as well as for teachers and caregivers.
20) There were many times when I fell into danger by imagining. Just like when I fell to the floor while spinning in the air while drowning in the imagination of being hung on an iron rod by rolling backwards. If the floor hadn't been carpeted, all of my front teeth would have been blown away. There was a time when I climbed up the bookshelf thinking that it was a cliff, and was unable to bear my weight and fell on the bookshelf that fell in front of me.
167) When the time before the publication of the first book is referred to as the study period for convenience, I spent the entire period searching for, refining, and nurturing the subject matter of the story in my head. For almost all of my conscious time, I only thought about picture book stories. To say that it was the hottest time of my life is somewhat insufficient. I was half crazy. Even if you are passionate about it, you won't be able to do it right away. 「What should I do to become a writer?」
Until an idea seed grows into a picture book for over twenty years
A note written by Yeorim Yoon, covering the entire process of creating a picture book.
Yeorim Yoon is a full-time writer who has written 47 picture books and 6 children's books. After working as a picture book editor, she worked as a translator, and as a writer for 22 years, she publishes picture books every year. Now, as soon as a new work is released, I have become a writer that readers can trust, but at first I failed the contest and the road to becoming a writer was only a bleak. I made a promise to myself, 'I write every day,' and I've been trying to keep it for 22 years.
Including the bestseller 『We Will Always Meet Again』, which sold more than 100,000 copies, 『The World of Boxes』, which received attention for dealing with the garbage crisis during the pandemic, the story of aunt and world-famous painter Yun Seoknam, 『I Want to Be a Painter!』, Bad It contains writing notes for children who love to write, such as the funny and instructive picture book 『The Land of Horses』.
p. 120) 『The World of the Box』 was released at the end of October 2020. It has been three and a half years since I first started writing with inspiration. In the meantime, the world was covered with the Corona 19 virus, and along with it, it was suffering from a courier crisis and garbage. As soon as 『The World of the Box』 was released, it received a lot of attention from many people, and in an instant the first edition was exhausted and a reprint was made. An article written at a time when a pandemic could not even be imagined met with Corona and gained popularity. - Picture book writing note 4 『The World of Boxes』
Advice from writer Mijin Cheon, the current editor-in-chief of the publishing house
A writing guide for picture book writers
Writer Cheon Mi-jin has written more than 30 picture books and is currently an editor with 18 years of experience working at a publishing company. I wrote a picture book because I was interested in Korean culture and food such as soybean paste stew, sikhye, rice cake soup, water kimchi, Chuseok, and New Year’s Day. Recently, many picture books for adults have been published, but the picture books by Cheon Mi-jin are overwhelmingly popular with children. This may be because, after writing, a 'five or six-year-old child' who lives inside the writer receives a final check to see if his writing is 'fun'. I have been conducting picture book writing workshops in libraries, educational centers, and schools, and this book faithfully contains the specific guidelines I would like to recommend to those who want to write in picture books.
1. The first readers of picture books are children (p. 193).
2. Let's make the key message of the story clear (p. 172).
3. The more the main character's point of view is set, the more interesting the story becomes. (p. 186)
4. Do not use fake children's lines. (p. 200)
5. When you're in a slump, let's try to distance ourselves from the stories I write. (p. 215)
6. If you have to preach, make it fun whenever possible. (p. 188)
7. Eliminate unnecessary expressions or difficult words as much as possible (p. 207).
8. The power of observation is very important in storytelling (p. 229).
9. Picture books are not only the author's book, but also the reader's book (p. 241).
10. Let's take the author's responsibility for my writing heavily. (p. 22)
Picture book study 'Soso' series
Small and big worlds through picture books
A time of 'healing' and 'thinking' read from a child's mind
In the 'Soso Picture Book Essay' series, experts in various fields (book protectors, picture book therapists, picture book writers, editors, translators, counseling psychologists) look into the world of picture books in detail and contain stories connected with the world. For those who are struggling with their busy lives, the 'Soso' series will come as a 'healing time' to look back on themselves, and a 'time of thought' for those who want to study picture books.
